At Future Training, we are committed to ensuring that every levy payer maximises their apprenticeship levy funding for meaningful learning and development within their organisations. Since the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in 2017, over £2 billion of apprenticeship funds have gone unused, with funds expiring after 24 months.

The apprenticeship levy is a UK tax applicable to employers with an annual pay bill exceeding £3 million, set at 0.5% of their total pay bill. This funding can be accessed through the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) for both new and existing employees and must be used for training provided by an approved training provider

  • The Apprenticeship Levy is a UK government initiative introduced in April 2017. It is a tax on employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million, set at 0.5% of their total payroll. The funds collected are used to support apprenticeship train ing across various sectors.

  • Any UK employer with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million is required to pay the levy. This includes businesses in both the public and private sectors.

  • The levy is collected through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) process, and it is automatically deducted from an employer's payroll. The funds are then credited to the employer's Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account and must be used within 24 months of being received.

  • Employers can use their levy funds to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment for their employees. This can include training for both new recruits and existing staff, as long as the training provider is approved by the DFE.

  • If levy funds are not used within 24 months, they will expire and be returned to the government. Since the levy was introduced, over £2 billion has gone unused, highlighting the importance of planning and utilising these funds effectively .

  • Yes, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can access apprenticeship funding through the co-investment model. The government contributes 95% of the training costs, making it easier for smaller businesses to take advantage of apprenticeship programmes without needing to pay the levy.

  • Employers can start by registering for the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) to manage their levy funds. From there, they can work with approved training providers to develop tailored apprenticeship programs that suit their workforce needs. Get in touch with Future Training and we can help setup your account and get started.
